Mets’ David Stearns announces firm Carlos Mendoza decision

After the New York Mets’ brutal second-half collapse, in which they dropped out of the playoffs despite looking like a top contender early in the year, a lot of change wouldn’t be surprising.

Player personnel always changes every year, and for the Mets, with Pete Alonso and potentially even Edwin Diaz on their way out of New York, those changes with the roster will be massive. But that’s not the only area facing some change.

The coaching staff is almost certainly going to undergo some alterations. However, in his end-of-season press conference, David Stearns announced a firm decision regarding Carlos Mendoza’s future as the Mets’ manager, and it’s the expected outcome.

David Stearn announces Mets’ Carlos Mendoza decision

Even though there have been some questions over whether Mendoza would return to the Mets for the 2026 MLB season, Stearns firmly made a decision, announcing on SNYtv that Mendoza would be back next year. “Yeah, Carlos is coming back next year,” Stearns said.

It’s the final confirmation of the reports shared after the Mets were eliminated on Sunday afternoon. While the Mets’ second-half collapse was stunning, Mendoza’s job is safe, and he’ll return for the 2026 season.

However, the same can’t be said for some of the other coaching staff members. While Stearns didn’t announce any firings or signify any changes specifically, he did reveal that changes could be on the horizon for the coaching staff.

“We’re going to go through an evaluation of our entire coaching staff,” Stearns said. “And we’ll do that over the course of the coming days to a week, and then we’ll make our decisions there.”

Later in the press conference, Stearns was asked why he and the Mets had decided to keep Mendoza with the team after the disastrous second half of this season.

“I still believe he’s a very good manager,” Stearns said, “and I think he’s going to demonstrate that.”

While the Mets had a tough season, and it ended in heartbreak, Stearns still believes in Mendoza to be the team’s manager.

In two years with the Mets, Mendoza has a 172-152 record, with one postseason appearance in 2024, and this latest collapse for his 2025 resume.

In 2024, the Mets were an incredible story, while in 2025, the Mets were incredible for all the wrong reasons. A lackluster 2026 could spell the end of his tenure in New York. But, for now, Mendoza is back and has the trust of Stearns and the Mets’ leadership.
