When the New York Mets had a 45-24 record, a lot of fans believed they were on their way to another postseason appearance. Well, the Mets struggled big time for the last three months.
Sunday was a sad ending to a pitiful season. They lost to the Miami Marlins 4-0. To make matters worse, the Cincinnati Reds also lost to the Milwaukee Brewers. The Mets lost the tiebreaker to the Reds and finished with an 83-79 record. With New York missing the playoffs, there is blame to go around with manager Carlos Mendoza, but there is no question that David Stearns is mainly responsible for this collapse.
New York Mets Fans Blame David Stearns for the Collapse
Outside of bringing back Pete Alonso and signing Juan Soto, Stearns failed in constructing this roster properly. Trading for outfielder Cedric Mullins and bullpen pitcher Ryan Helsley was a total disaster. He also did a very poor job of trying to construct the starting rotation. He has to spend money or trade for a quality starting pitcher this offseason.
Mets fans believe that Stearns is responsible for this collapse.
The Mets historic collapse falls way more on David Stearns than Carlos Mendoza, but you know the manager will be the one paying the price.

@StevenACohen2 When you going to fire David Stearns for the poorly constructed team? Unacceptable result for the payroll.

David Stearns really thought he was smarter than everyone with the pitching staff he put out there.
His hubris led to the Mets missing the playoffs.

There is no doubt that Stearns is going to be under fire all offseason long if he is not fired for his poor roster construction. He is going to be on the hot seat entering the 2026 MLB season. He will be entering his third season on a five-year deal.
Stearns did a horrible job this season. If he is kept around, he cannot try to be smarter than everyone in the room. If his ego gets in his own way again, the Mets won’t be good again next season, and he could potentially be fired.
