The Toronto Blue Jays have a really solid starting rotation with the likes of Kevin Gausman, Jose Berrios, and Chris Bassitt, but one thing the rotation lacks is a southpaw.
The Philadelphia Phillies have an abundance of left-handed starters, and one in particular is set to test the free agent market following the season.
Philadelphia is going to have to commit to Kyle Schwarber long-term this Winter, and that may mean southpaw starter Ranger Suarez is halfway out the door at this moment. Suarez will have an opportunity to shine in the playoffs and make himself extra AAV on his deal in the offseason.
Ranger Suarez is predicted to sign with the Blue Jays
Ranger Suarez has put together a stellar season for the Phillies. He’s thrown 153 innings this season and has a 3.12 ERA in 25 starts, and Suarez is known for keeping the ball in the ballpark and having exceptional command.
In a recent Bleacher Report predictions piece, writer Joe Tansey predicts that Ranger Suarez will sign with the Toronto Blue Jays in this upcoming free agency:
“Suarez would be a good fit in Toronto because he balances out the current rotation the Blue Jays have. Adding a lefthander who can get batters out in different ways would be a nice complement to Gausman and Bieber. The Orioles could chase Suarez, but Trevor Rogers fits a similar profile at the top of their rotation.”
“Prediction: Suarez signs with Blue Jays”
Suarez has become known as a pitcher who is also able to “win” games. He has three double-digit win seasons in the last four seasons, and has pitched 150+ innings in three of the last four seasons as well.
Considering the Phillies already have a lot of money designated to their starting rotation, moving on from Suarez seems obvious at this point. It will just be up to whatever team wants to dish out a long-term extension for the 30-year-old.
