Ryder Cup purse, payout breakdown: How much prize money do winners make in 2025?

From Sept. 26-28, the 45th Ryder Cup will be played at the Black Course of Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, New York.

As the U.S. squad looks to take down Europe’s bunch after a 2023 loss, there are certainly bragging rights on the line for the biennial competition. But will players benefit from participating in other ways?

The Ryder Cup differs from many other PGA Tour and professional events in how players are compensated.

Ryder Cup prize money

There is no prize money awarded to players for winning the Ryder Cup. That has been tradition, as the event prioritizes the honor of representing the U.S. or Europe vs. playing for a massive payout. However, there will be changes in 2025 that involve U.S. players receiving money for their participation.

For European players, it has become a tradition for their captain to give each player a gift for their participation, with no other financial involvement. But the PGA of America previously announced that starting for this year’s Ryder Cup, U.S. players will receive a payout that’s split between charity donation and a “stipend.”

The PGA of America will be giving the 12-player U.S. team $500,000 each, with $300,000 going to a charity or charities of the player’s choice. The remaining $200,000 is supposed to be a stipend that covers other expenses for the event.

The 2025 Ryder Cup marks the first time ever that U.S. players will be compensated for the event. However, multiple players have said that they plan to donate the full $500,000 to charity, rather than just the $300,000, per ESPN.

“I’ve never been one to announce what we do. I don’t like to give charitable dollars for some kind of recognition,” world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler said of the new payout, per ESPN. “We have something planned for the money that we’ll be receiving. I think it’s a really cool thing that the PGA of America has empowered us to do.”

United States captain Keegan Bradley said the PGA of America approached him last year about compensating players, according to ESPN. In November, a vote for the $500,000, with $300,000 going to charity, was held.

Xander Schauffele was another player who shared plans to donate the entire paycheck to charity.

“You guys keep talking about it and trying to make it this negative thing. It’s whatever everyone views it as,” Schauffele said, per ESPN. “There’s a lot of pride that comes into playing in one of these, and yes, we’re happy to get paid for this, and yes, I plan on donating it. It’s something that selfishly will make me feel good about what I do.”

The decision for U.S. players to be compensated was a controversial one among both players and fans, ever since the 2023 event in Rome. Rory McIlroy was one player to previously voice his displeasure at the move.

“I personally would pay for the privilege to play in the Ryder Cup,” McIlroy told BBC Sport in 2024. “I have come a long way in this, especially with the Olympics, but the two purest forms of competition in our game right now are the Ryder Cup and Olympics, partly because of the purity of no money being involved.”

While the winning team won’t receive any extra money either way, the U.S. players will technically be getting compensated for their participation, although many of them plan to donate the money.
