Mets cut ties with outfielder fans wanted just a few months ago

The New York Mets are doing their best to hang on to the final National League Wild Card spot. The Philadelphia Phillies have already clinched the National League East, and the Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres have already clinched their postseason berths, leaving just one spot.

New York holds a one-game lead over the Cincinnati Reds for that final spot. They have their work cut out for them with two more games against the Cubs and three games against the Miami Marlins.

With a tight postseason race, the club decided to make a roster move ahead of their Wednesday game against the Cubs. Outfielder Tyrone Taylor has been reinstated from the injured list, while Jose Siri has been designated for assignment.

The Mets acquired Jose Siri in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays ahead of the 2025 season. Unfortunately, he would miss a good chunk of the season when it was revealed that he sustained a left tibia fracture in late April.

Trying to fill the hole, the club acquired Cedric Mullins at the trade deadline, but he struggled largely at the plate. Fans could not wait for Siri to return, but when he did, he did not produce much at the plate either.

Needing some offense and having more outfielders than they know what to do with, the Mets had no choice but to DFA Siri. He will be made available to all 29 other teams, and with the timing, it will be interesting to see which teams could be interested in a sure-glove outfielder.
