Toronto reportedly closing in on extension with starting goaltender

With some big extensions having been completed across the league this offseason when it comes to goalies, Dustin Wolf and Spencer Knight being the prime examples, attention shifts to Toronto as they have their own starter in need of a new deal.

Last year was a career season for Anthony Stolarz in the Leafs net as he enjoyed his best numbers across the board. The 31 year old recorded a 21-8-3 record with 4 shutouts and produced a 2.14 goals against average and .926 save percentage. These stats put him towards the top of the leader board versus NHL goalies league wide.

The 31 year old is due to be a UFA in 2026 entering the last year of his $2.5 million contract as he awaits an extension. The good news for Leafs fans is it sounds like an agreement could be on the horizon soon.

What is the latest on Stolarz?

Via insider Elliotte Friedman on 32 Thoughts, Stolarz and the Leafs have made progress on reaching terms for the new contract. Friedman believes the term will come in around 3-4 years.

The question mark appears to be what the value of the deal will look like. Contract comp’s could be used with some of the recent signings with Knight making $5.83 million and Wolf $7.5 million. Could Stolarz’s camp be looking for something around this range?

Of course Stolarz is in a different career situation than those 2 young netminders who are expected to be the starting goalies of the future for their respective teams. That is not clear for Stolarz who while coming off a season best last year has Joseph Woll to contend with for that position. If Toronto wants to keep this 1A 1B tandem going and with their cap situation, Stolarz will likely only be able to command so much.
