Wayne Rooney criticizes Enzo Maresca for substituting key Chelsea man

Enzo Maresca had to make big changes to his Chelsea side after Robert Sanchez was sent off early against Manchester United.

Maresca took youngster Estevao Willian off to bring on backup keeper Filip Jorgensen.

The manager also subbed off Pedro Neto to bring on Tosin Adarabioyo, in an effort to absorb United’s pressure with five defenders.

Former United player has criticized Maresca for taking Neto off the pitch, in what turned out to be a Chelsea loss.

What did Rooney say about Maresca’s substitutions?

Speaking on BBC Match of the Day, Rooney didn’t agree with Maresca’s decision to take Neto, a massively creative player, off after he had already sacrificed Estevao.

Rooney said, “They had no imagination on the pitch, did they? I felt that’s what was missing for Chelsea.

“They had a lot of possession going side-to-side second half, but they missed that creativity, which a Cole Palmer or a Neto could bring them. So I think the change was strange, but thankfully, it helped United.”

Neto appeared frustrated after being taken off, as the winger hoped to make an impact in a big game.

Palmer also made way just after the 20th minute of play, although Maresca clarified that the Englishman is still struggling with a groin injury.

Neto has been a spark for Chelsea, with the Portuguese international having scored one goal this Premier League campaign.

Neto enjoyed his first season with Chelsea in 2024, racking up four goals and six assists in 35 league appearances.
