Tyler Herro injury update: Latest news on Heat guard’s status for the start of NBA season

The Miami Heat received some tough news for their 2025-26 season on Friday.

Tyler Herro, the team’s leading scorer last season and a six-year contributor to the Heat, is set to miss the start of the season due to an injury, per ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Herro, 25, was an All-Star for the first time in 2024-25 and has become more of an offensive focal point for Miami since Jimmy Butler’s departure.

Tyler Herro injury update

On Friday, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that Herro will be undergoing surgery on his left foot, which is expected to keep him sidelined through the start of the 2025-26 season. The Miami Herald’s Anthony Chiang also reported that Herro’s left foot/ankle surgery will be on Friday.

Charania added that Herro “suffered an ankle injury in an offseason workout that led to the decision for surgery.”

According to Chiang, an “ankle/foot impingement has been bothering Herro since the middle of the summer.” While the guard previously received injections in the hopes of avoiding surgery, “the discomfort never subsided,” leading to the decision for surgery.

Herro, likely entering his prime as a 25-year-old guard who was a first-time All-Star last season, has been with the Heat for all six years of his career. The Kentucky alum was Miami’s first-round pick at No. 13 overall in the 2019 NBA Draft and won the 2022 Sixth Man of the Year award.

His absence will be an early tough blow for Erik Spoelstra’s team, which added veteran guard Norman Powell in the offseason to start the new year. Miami’s preseason opener is Oct. 4, while its regular-season opener is Oct. 22 against the Orlando Magic.

How long is Tyler Herro out?

Herro’s foot injury is not expected to be season-ending. Charania reported that the guard will be “sidelined to begin the 2025-26 season,” while Chiang noted that by his “guess,” Herro would be out for at least the first month of the 2025-26 season, and “possibly a little more.”

However, further clarity on Herro’s timeline is expected following his surgery.

Either way, Herro’s absence to start the new season could make things more difficult for the Heat, especially on offense. Last season, he averaged career highs with 23.9 points, 5.5 assists, and 3.3 three-pointers made per game, also playing in a career-high 77 games.

In his absence, Miami will likely have to rely on players like Powell, Terry Rozier, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Davion Mitchell to lift its backcourt to start the 2025-26 campaign.
