The defending champions registered two stirring comeback wins to knock out hosts China 2-0. While Elisabetta Cocciaretto battled back from a break down in the second and third set to beat Yue Yuan 4-6, 7-6, 6-4, Jasmine Paolini followed an exact same script to score a 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 win over Xinyu Wang.
They are now aiming to become the first team since the Czech Republic in 2016 to defend their championship.
Meanwhile, Ukraine made history by making the semifinals of the premier women’s team event for the very first time. They defeated Spain 2-0 in the quarterfinal clash on Wednesday.
Marta Kostyuk gave them the lead with a resounding 7-6, 6-2 win over Jessica Bouzas Maneiro. World No. 13 Elina Svitolina sealed the tie in their favor by beating Paula Badosa 5-7, 6-2, 7-5.
