Yankees announce Jose Caballero trade from Rays is finally complete

Of the many moves that the New York Yankees made at the MLB trade deadline, one of the more underrated was their acquisition of versatile infielder/outfielder Jose Caballero.

He’s helped the Yankees add some flexibility to their lineup and defensive alignment, while now having a replacement for Anthony Volpe as the struggling shortstop deals with an injury.

It was a good trade for the Yankees; however, until just recently, the deal wasn’t officially complete. However, the Yankees finally announced that the last piece of the Caballero trade was sent to the Tampa Bay Rays, completing the deadline deal.

Yankees announce final prospect heading to Tampa Bay for Caballero

“The New York Yankees have traded OF Marshall Toole to the Tampa Bay Rays as the player to be named later in the 7/31/25 trade in which the Yankees acquired INF/OF Jose Caballero in exchange for Everson Pereira.” The Yankees announced.

Toole was the Yankees’ 15th-round draft choice in the 2024 MLB draft, and at Wofford College, he hit .333 with a .935 OPS across 162 games. He signed a $150,000 deal with the Yankees, and a little over a year later, he is heading to Tampa Bay in a trade.

He played in 17 games at Single-A in 2024, hitting .255 with an .802 OPS. But the 22-year-old in 2025 put on a show in Single-A, hitting .305 with an .885 OPS across 96 games with 14 doubles, 13 triples, five home runs, 48 RBIs, and 52 walks.

His 13 triples in 96 games are an incredible number, and point to his speed on the base paths. Toole has a lot of talent there, as he had 44 stolen bases the year before being traded to Tampa Bay.

Neither of the prospects dealt to the Rays is within their top-30 ranked prospects by MLB Pipeline, but they are both still intriguing names to keep an eye on as they work up through the minor leagues.

In the 34 games since coming to the Yankees, Caballero has been great. With a .258 batting average and an .820 OPS, along with strong defense, Caballero has provided solid value to the Yankees.

Under team control through 2029, Caballero is a long-term option for the Yankees for their roster, and so far, it’s looking like an incredible trade. Now, with the final piece of the deal finalized, the production of Caballero to the rise of Toole and Pereira can be compared to determine which team came out on top in the deal.

The final outlook of the trade has the Yankees sending Marshall Toole, a 22-year-old outfielder, and Everson Pereira, a 24-year-old outfielder, to the Rays for Jose Caballero. Toole has yet to appear for the Rays in the minors, while Pereira has a .448 OPS in 20 games for the Rays in the Majors this season.
