Owen Hargreaves urges Chelsea to rival Liverpool for signing after Bayern Munich loss

Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has urged Chelsea to join Liverpool in the race to sign Marc Guehi after their defeat to Bayern Munich on Wednesday evening.

Chelsea were outplayed by Bayern Munich on their return to the Champions League for the first time in two years as the German club ran out 3-1 winners.

Despite showing some periods of promise throughout the game, the Blues were comfortably beaten by the home side.

What’s more worrying from a Chelsea point of view is that all three goals came from avoidable defensive errors.

The defeat highlighted the soft core that Chelsea have at the heart of their defence, and Hargreaves has suggested the signing of Guehi as a possible solution for it.

Chelsea are currently without the services of their best defender, Levi Colwill, who is out with an ACL injury for the majority of the season.

While Tosin Adarabioyo and Trevoh Chalobah have established themselves as the preferred centre-back partnership for Chelsea, the Blues are currently missing the quality of Colwill and an experienced central defender.

In this scenario, Hargreaves was quick to point out after the game that he felt Chelsea needed more experience in the backline.

“If I think back to those Chelsea teams that won everything, they had Petr Cech, Carvalho, John Terry, that’s the basis of any team,” he told TNT Sports.

“It’s not a criticism, it’s just a fact and I thought the two young centre-backs did okay, but we’re talking about [Luis] Diaz, [Michael] Olise and Kane, some of the top performers. It was a big ask for them, but mistakes cost them more than anything.”

Chelsea were linked with a move for Guehi in the summer, but they decided against it. Now, Hargreaves has urged Enzo Maresca’s team to join Liverpool in the race for the English defender when the transfer window opens next.
