Tigers expected to let go of All-Star, World Series champion over offseason

Outside of ace Tarik Skubal, the Detroit Tigers starting pitching rotation has been in shambles throughout the 2025 season, and the team set a goal during the trade deadline to attempt to alleviate the pain from the problem.

During said attempt, the Tigers made a deal with the Baltimore Orioles to acquire starting pitcher Charlie Morton, a two-time All-Star in 2018 and 2019, and a two-time World Series champion in 2017 and 2021 with the Houston Astros and Atlanta Braves, respectively.

However, it seems to have done the team more harm than good, and the 41-year-old may be looking for a new home again soon.

Morton Expected To Leave Detroit After 2025 Season

According to Katrina Stebbins with Motor City Bengals, Morton is one of five current Detroit Tigers that could be playing their final games with the team, highlighting that Morton could play a factor with the Tigers in the postseason given his experience, but anything after that can simply be tossed out.

“Morton’s 80 innings of postseason experience and decent 3.60 lifetime ERA in October probably also had something to do with that decision (to keep him in the rotation),” Stebbins wrote. “He may still prove to be an asset during the Tigers’ postseason run, but even that shouldn’t be enough for Detroit to re-sign him for 2026.”

Combined with Baltimore and Detroit in 2025, Morton is 9-10 with a 5.56 ERA and 146 strikeouts in 139.1 innings pitched.
