The Minnesota Vikings are bringing back veteran running back Cam Akers for a third stint, adding experience to the backfield amid injury concerns over Aaron Jones.
According to Ben Goessling of The Minnesota Star Tribune, the Vikings are signing Akers to its practice squad.
The move comes after Jones suffered a hamstring injury in Week 2. Jones is expected to be placed on injured reserve, which means he’ll miss at least the next four games.
Akers appeared in six games with the Vikings in 2023, and then in 12 games in 2024. Last season, he tallied 64 carries for 297 yards and one touchdown while also adding 10 receptions for 52 yards and two more scores. While he was originally signed to the team’s practice squad, he could be elevated to the active roster come Sunday.
Akers was a second-round pick of the Los Angeles Rams in 2020 and showed some promise early on, but injuries derailed his career. Among those injuries were two Achilles tears, one in 2023 and another in 2021.
With Jones sidelined, Jordan Mason is expected to be the clear lead back. Mason has been the more impressive back for Minnesota over the first two weeks.
The Vikings also took a hit to their depth after Ty Chandler landed on injured reserve. Akers will likely play the RB2 role in his first game back with Minnesota.
The Vikings also have Zavier Scott on the 53-man roster and Xazavian Valladay on the practice squad.
