Astros make Yordan Alvarez announcement during Rangers game

When fans thought it couldn’t get any worse, another unfortunate setback took place within the Houston Astros’ lineup on Monday.

Injuries have been an immense problem in the Astros’ attempt to stay relevant in the postseason race with just a few weeks remaining. Houston was stripped of their top spot in the AL West over the weekend as the Seattle Mariners continued their nine-game win streak.

While Houston fights for the top spot, which they have owned for a majority of the season, the Astros were dealt another devastating injury in Monday’s game against the Texas Rangers.

Yordan Alvarez exits Monday’s game with an ankle sprain

In the very first inning of their matchup against the Texas Rangers, Yordan Alvarez was running through home base and planted his foot on the bag. His foot slipped rather than planting into the plate, and his left leg buckled.

After the injury took place, he exited the game. Rookie outfielder Zach Cole replaced Alvarez in left field.

The Houston Astros announced on social media that Alvarez has been diagnosed with a left ankle sprain. It seems that the three-time All-Star dodged a bullet, as the video looks like the injury could have been to his knee.

It’s a frustrating injury for both Alvarez and the Astros, as he’s been battling his way back from the 60-day injured list after suffering from a fractured hand earlier in the season. It’s resulted in Alvarez playing in just 48 games this season.
