After the grand slams, the tennis world turns to Shenzhen for the Billie Jean King Cup, the premier women’s tennis team event. The opening clash between defending champions Italy and hosts China will be held on Tuesday in Shenzhen.
The two nations are among eight teams competing for the ‘World Cup of tennis.’
Italy ended their 11-year title drought by winning the BJK Cup Finals in 2024. Their top player Jasmine Paolini will once again look to lead the team to glory. Meanwhile, China will be without reigning Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng, who is out due to injury. In her absence, World No 34 Wang Xinyu is the leading singles player.
In a head-to-head series, Italy has a 2-0 advantage and have not conceded a single point to China. Meanwhile, the Chinese will be playing their first-ever BJK Finals courtesy of direct entry as hosts.
