Former Nuggets first-round pick re-signs with Timberwolves

Michael Scotto of Hoops Hype is reporting that the Minnesota Timberwolves and former Denver Nuggets first-round pick Bones Hyland have agreed to a deal.

The former VCU standout is entering his fifth season in the NBA and second with the Timberwolves.

Hyland, a 9.5 career points per game scorer, will look to latch onto Minnesota’s roster as the 2025-26 NBA season approaches.

Bones Hyland, Journeyman at Age 25

The 26th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft has had an interesting career path in his short stint in the league, to say the least.

As a rookie in Denver, Hyland displayed tantalizing upside, appearing in 69 games, averaging 10.1 points per game along with almost three assists per game.

During his second season with Denver, Hyland felt he wasn’t being used to his full potential and demanded a trade, and was shipped to the Los Angeles Clippers. Despite playing 42 games for the eventual 2022-23 champion Nuggets, Hyland did not receive a championship ring.

After three seasons in Los Angeles, Hyland was part of the trade that landed the Clippers Bogdan Bogdanović from the Atlanta Hawks. The 2021-22 All-Rookie team member never played a game in Atlanta and was waived shortly thereafter.

Hyland signed a 10-day contract with Minnesota and closed out the 2024-25 with the Timberwolves, appearing in four games with minimal playing time.

Minnesota’s team president, Tim Connelly, was in Denver when they selected Hyland in the 2021 draft, and clearly likes the upside he brings to the table.

Now he’ll have a chance to make a home with the Timberwolves, but he’ll have to prove it in training camp first.
