Where could Kirill Kaprizov end up? Insider names 5 early teams to watch

It’s been almost a week since insider Frank Seravalli first reported that Kirill Kaprizov had rejected a historic eight-year, $128 million contract offer from the Minnesota Wild.

There have been rumors and speculation ever since, yet nothing has truly dispelled the notion that the superstar winger turned it down, sparking questions about his future with the organization.

If Kaprizov isn’t willing to extend in Minnesota, the Wild would almost certainly have to explore trading him in order to get something back for their franchise player before he hits free agency.

We’re still very early in the process, but Wild insider Michael Russo already has a short list of teams we can expect to see heavily in on Kaprizov should he become available. Here was what he said during a recent episode of the “Worst Seats in the House” podcast.

“Rangers, I know the Hurricanes are going to be a team that’s going to be very interested, and we obviously know that the Blackhawks—I know Kirill loves that city; I don’t know if he loves the organization. There’s going to be the usual suspects that come after him, LA; I think he’d love Tampa,” Russo said.

The 28-year-old is about to enter the final season of the five-year, $45 million contract extension he signed with the Wild back in 2021. He potted 56 points (25 goals, 31 assists) despite playing in only 41 games during the 2024-25 campaign.

Other teams to keep in mind

The five teams Michael Russo mentioned that will have major interest in Kirill Kaprizov are spot on, though there are some others to keep an eye on in these sweepstakes.

Kaprizov has a desire to win, clearly wants big money, and is likely seeking to play in a bigger market. Given that, the New York Islanders, San Jose Sharks, and Washington Capitals could all make sense. They may not meet all the criteria as of right now, but all appear to be on the right trajectory moving forward.

Of course, it’s still very possible that the Minnesota Wild find a way to extend Kaprizov; however, just like with Connor McDavid in Edmonton, every passing day increases the chances of a big-time move that could shake up the NHL.
