In search of their first gold medal at EuroBasket, Alperen Sengun and Turkey took on favored Germany in the championship match Sunday afternoon.
It was close throughout, with Turkey holding a 46-40 halftime lead. The second half told a different story, as they were outscored 48-37 in a five-point loss.
Sengun led Turkey with 28 points, three rebounds and three assists. Cedi Osman was one of three other Turkish players in double figures, finishing with 23 points.
Germany’s 3-point shooting proved nearly impossible to stop, going 14-for-26 (53.8%). Turkey also struggled on the glass, getting outrebounded by 10.
Despite falling short in the title match, both Sengun and Turkey had a successful EuroBasket. The only other time Turkey took home silver came in 2001, when they were led by longtime NBA veteran Hedo Turkoglu.
Sengun dazzled throughout the tournament, finishing seventh in points per game at 21.6 and fourth in rebounds at 10.1. He also showcased his vision, averaging 6.6 assists, tied for third among all players.
Rockets fans will be eager to see their star center carry over that success to the NBA season. The 23-year-old is looking to build on his first All-Star campaign, when he averaged 19.1 points, 10.3 rebounds and 4.9 assists. Teammate Amen Thompson, 22, is also poised for another strong year after being named to the All-Defensive First Team in his sophomore season.
After trading Jalen Green to acquire Kevin Durant, the Rockets appear primed for another strong run following last season’s 52-win campaign.
