No pitcher in the storied history of the New York Yankees has shut down the Boston Red Sox better to start their career than Luis Gil.
The talented right-hander now has a 0.99 ERA in five career starts against the Red Sox. That’s a Yankees record for an opening five-start span against their rival, according to Baseball Reference’s Katie Sharp.
Gil’s latest gem was nearly spotless.
He went 6.0 innings on Friday night and didn’t allow a single hit.

The Red Sox reached base via four walks against Gil but nothing else. He also struck out four hitters.
Boston’s only run was a home run in the seventh off Fernando Cruz after Gil was pulled.
The Yankees already held a 4-0 lead by the middle of the seventh in Fenway Park, though.
Aaron Judge homered, passing Joe DiMaggio on the franchise’s home run record list.

They also got an RBI apiece from Ben Rice, Cody Bellinger and Ryan McMahon.
Jazz Chisholm swiped two bases, and Jose Caballero had a double and his 46th steal of the season.
All in all, a successful night for the Yankees.
In the process, New York opened up a 1.5 game lead on Boston in the standings, meaning the Yankees are in the AL’s first wild card spot while Boston is in the second.
The Yankees have 15 games left, while Boston has 14 games to play.
