Bundesliga side Hamburg pulled off a significant deal on Transfer Deadline Day as they signed Fabio Vieira on loan from Arsenal.
The 25-year-old, who was looked at by a number of clubs this summer, is set to spend the season away from north London after being told he is not in Mikel Arteta’s plans going forward.
Vieira’s deal, according to The Sporting News, is understood to involve a loan fee of less than €400,000 (around $432,000), with sources indicating that figure could even drop depending on performance-related conditions.
However, the purchase option has been set at approximately €20 million ($21.6m), giving the Portuguese midfielder the chance to earn a permanent switch if he impresses.
That option remains valid until mid-May 2026, shortly after the conclusion of the season, providing the buying club with a clear window to make a decision on Vieira’s future.
Arteta’s side also safeguarded themselves with a sell-on clause, believed to be between 10 and 20 per cent of any future transfer fee.

It ensures that, should Vieira rediscover his best form elsewhere and secure a big-money move down the line, the Gunners will still benefit financially.
Vieira has shown flashes of quality since arriving at the Emirates from Porto but has struggled for consistency and regular minutes under Arteta.
What is Myles Lewis-Skelly being asked to improve on?
Meanwhile, new assistant coach Gabriel Heinze has made a fast start to life at the Sobha Realty Training centre.
The Argentine has been working closely with Myles Lewis-Skelly, with particular focus on crossing technique and movement in advanced areas.
Former Manchester United defender Heinze is believed to have introduced specific drills aimed at helping Skelly better exploit attacking opportunities in the final third.
Coaching staff including Heinze believe the 18-year-old can push on even more from last season and take his game to the next level.
Lewis Skelly was a surprise omission from Thomas Tuchel’s England squad against Serbia, with the decision believed to be a ‘tactical and physical one’ due to his lack of gametime so far this season.
The Hale End academy graduate has been named on the substitutes bench in Arsenal’s first three games of the new season following Riccardo Calafiori’s return to full fitness.
