Celtics urged to consider trading $45 million sharpshooter before next season

The Boston Celtics have been one of the most active teams this offseason, and another big move could add to their list of transactions.

After winning the NBA title in 2024, not much has gone as the Celtics wanted. From losing in the second round last season and losing Jayson Tatum to the second apron staring at them this offseason, the Celtics haven’t had an ideal past few months.

With concerns about their future cap flexibility, the Celtics began their offseason by shipping out Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis. Also losing Luke Kornet and Al Horford in free agency, the Celtics have been searching for answers in what looks to be a gap year next season.

Still time to sell?

The Celtics’ idea of selling this offseason before reloading for Tatum’s return in 2026-27 has been a common theme in their moves. It could also be what leads them to potentially trading Sam Hauser, which Celtics on SI’s Alex Kirschenbaum recently noted.

While Kirschenbaum also noted that Anfernee Simons has been seen as Boston’s likeliest next departure, Hauser’s shooting ability and contract could make him more desirable, especially for a contender.

This could also be a great move for the Celtics in terms of risk. Hauser is set to take on a much larger role than he’s had up to this point, and a lack of performance could turn his value deal into a bad contract quickly. So, if the Celtics can find the right deal and get Hauser to a new team, it might be worth trying.
