Kyrie Irving’s comeback: The spark Dallas needs in 2025–26

The Dallas Mavericks enter the 2025–26 season with high expectations, but they’ll have to start without one of their biggest stars. Kyrie Irving, the veteran All-Star guard, is still recovering from the torn ACL he suffered last spring. The injury cut short what had been an impressive season, forcing Dallas to navigate without its primary shot creator during the playoff push.

Before going down, Irving was in vintage form, averaging 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.6 assists on 47.3% shooting over 50 games. He delivered statement performances, including a 40-point night against Golden State and a 37-point triple-double against New Orleans, proving he can still take over games at the highest level.

Now, all eyes are on his return timeline — and the calendar offers two marquee possibilities. If his recovery continues at its current pace, the Mavericks are eyeing a return on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in mid-January, when Dallas hosts the New York Knicks. But if Irving’s rehab progresses ahead of schedule, Christmas Day looms as an electrifying early comeback, with the Mavericks set to face the Golden State Warriors in a nationally televised showdown. Either date would mark one of the league’s most anticipated returns.

Once Irving is back, the Mavericks’ offense instantly regains its versatility and unpredictability. His elite shot creation, range, and clutch scoring pair perfectly with Anthony Davis’ inside dominance and rookie Cooper Flagg’s energy and length. The return also unlocks Dallas’ late-game offense, where Irving’s calm under pressure can tilt close contests in their favor.

Beyond the box score, Irving’s presence steadies the locker room. His championship experience and veteran leadership could be the glue that binds a roster undergoing major transition after the Luka Dončić trade.

If Dallas can keep itself firmly in the playoff mix until his return, the second half of the season could bring a surge — fueled by fresh legs, a deeper rotation, and a closing lineup few teams can match.

Whether it’s on Christmas against Golden State or MLK Day versus the Knicks, Kyrie Irving’s return could be the turning point that transforms Dallas from hopeful contender to legitimate threat for the 2026 NBA title.
