Red Sox linked to $66 million two-time All-Star to replace Triston Casas this offseason

The Boston Red Sox have found long-term solutions to most of their positions, minus one: first base. Currently, they technically have a solution in Triston Casas, but his inability to be available should lead them to seek other options.

Fansided’s Jake Elman believes they can find such a replacement in Seattle Mariners third baseman Eugenio Suarez, who is becoming a free agent this offseason.

“We promise that we’re not cheating by including Suárez, who has primarily played third base since 2016. Suárez saw his first career action at first base this year, suiting up once for the Diamondbacks and, as of publication, twice for the Mariners. It’s certainly not unrealistic that the Red Sox would consider moving a 34-year-old Suárez to first base, and we feel that it’s worth contemplating,” Elman wrote.

Elman continued, stating the Sox could probably get him on a cheap one-year rental due to his poor stats with the Mariners this season.

“Perhaps the most appealing part for the Red Sox is that Suárez might come cheaper than one would have guessed two months ago. Suárez owns a .191 average and a .699 OPS over 151 plate appearances with the Mariners, far below the .248 average and .897 OPS he provided the Diamondbacks with in nearly 450 plate appearances. If Suárez needs to settle for a one-year, prove-it deal, he should strongly seek such a contract with the Red Sox,” Elman stated.

This season, Suarez is slashing .233/.306/.539/.845 with 45 homers, which is already better than Casas’ last two seasons combined, considering he’s only played little over half a season in those two years.

Hopefully the Sox consider this option, as if they can’t win it all this year, next year is as good as any, and Suarez helps their chances immensely.
