Knicks reportedly targeting free agent three-point specialist

After losing to the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals, the New York Knicks have done everything they can this offseason to improve their roster and get to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999.

They’ve retained their core rotation that got them to the Conference Finals, and even added some depth pieces in scoring guard Jordan Clarkson and stretch big man Guerschon Yabusele.

But they still have one open roster spot available, and there’s a free agent guard they’ve reportedly had their eyes on.

Knicks Linked to Free Agent Guard Malcolm Brogdon

According to SNY’s insider Ian Begley, free agent guard Malcolm Brogdon is a player they have their eye on for their final roster spot.

“Knicks have had dialogue with free agent Ben Simmons over the course of the offseason and certainly have had interest in him, but club has never made a formal offer to Simmons, per league sources. Landry Shamet, Malcolm Brogdon among those on NYK radar for its lone roster spot,” wrote Begley on X.

Brogdon, a nine-year NBA veteran, would be a fine addition to round out New York’s roster. While his numbers have diminished in recent years thanks to reduced roles on rebuilding teams, the former Sixth Man of the Year winner has always been an elite three-point shooter, averaging 38.8% in his career.

A contender like the Knicks can never have enough depth, and considering how thin they are at point guard, the former Milwaukee Buck would be a perfect addition to run New York’s second unit.

Second-year point guard Tyler Kolek flashed throughout his rookie season, but still needs some more time to develop. The Marquette product could learn a lot from sitting and watching Jalen Brunson and Brogdon orchestrate the offense.

If Brogdon is comfortable playing on the veteran’s minimum, which is all the Knicks can offer to stay under the dreaded second apron, he would be a perfect final piece to New York’s otherwise complete roster.
