Anthony Davis gets surprising injury update from Mavericks insider

The Dallas Mavericks are eager to begin a full season with Anthony Davis, their new centerpiece who was limited to just nine games for them last year due to injury. Unfortunately, Dallas may have to wait a bit longer before seeing Davis take the court with No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg.

When Davis is on the floor, his impact is undeniable. Throughout his 13-year career Davis is averaging 24.1 points, 10.7 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game. He is a five-time All-NBA selection, a five-time All-Defensive First Team honoree, and has led the league in blocks three times.

But with the 10-time All-Star, health is always a concern. After suffering an abductor strain in his Mavericks debut following the trade from the Los Angeles Lakers, Davis later underwent offseason eye surgery to repair a detached retina.

The procedure was completed in July, with hopes he would be ready for opening night against the San Antonio Spurs. As of now, though, that remains uncertain.

NBA insider Marc Stein recently reported that Davis is not yet ready to resume basketball activities, casting doubt on his availability for training camp at the end of September.

If sidelined for camp, Davis could be three to four weeks away from returning, putting his status for the Oct. 22 opener in jeopardy. The Mavericks are already without star point guard Kyrie Irving, who is expected to miss time until at least January following an ACL tear.

Dallas is hopeful Davis can return in time to ramp up for the start of the season.
