Argentina was on the receiving end of a 1-0 defeat against Ecuador in their final match of the World Cup Qualifiers on September 9 at Banco Pichincha Monumental Stadium.
La Albiceleste were left with 10 men on the pitch after Nicolas Otamendi was shown a direct red card in the 31st minute, followed by Enner Valencia scoring the sole goal of the match by successfully converting a penalty before the conclusion of the first half.
The recent defeat does not affect Argentina’s chances, as they have already qualified for the World Cup next year. However, the match against Ecuador ended with a disadvantage for La Albiceleste.
Otamendi’s red card against Ecuador will see the centre-back missing in action in Argentina’s opening match in the 2026 World Cup. The 37-year-old, who has been a regular starter for head coach Lionel Scaloni, has made 128 appearances while recording seven goals and three assists for La Albiceleste.
What’s next for Lionel Messi-led Argentina?
Having secured a spot in next year’s World Cup, Lionel Messi’s side will now play two friendly matches during the next international break in October against Venezuela and Puerto Rico.
Last week, Messi scored a brace in Argentina’s 3-0 win against Venezuela on September 4, at Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires.

Following the match, which could possibly be his last national match at home, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner was seen emotional and made an uncertain admission about his availability in the competition next year.
It remains to be seen if Messi decides to be a part of the national squad and fight to win his second World Cup with Argentina next year in North America.
