Why Bills let Von Miller leave for the Commanders

The Buffalo Bills gave Von Miller a $120 million contract.

But it never worked out.

A knee injury stopped Miller from being his full self with the Bills, and now he’s no longer rocking the blue, red and white.

Instead, Miller is with the Washington Commanders for the 2025 NFL season.

He played about 40% of their snaps in the season opener.

“I just love football, man,” Miller told ESPN. “I love all aspects about it. I love practice, watching film, being in the locker room with the guys. I guess if I got bored, I might want to do something other than this, but so far I haven’t. I just love it.”

Why did the Bills let Von Miller leave for the Commanders?

The Buffalo Bills cut Von Miller for salary-cap reasons.

By letting Miller go this offseason, the Bills cleared $8.4 million off their books for the 2025 season.

His 2022 torn ACL had prevented him from ever living up to his contract with the Bills.

The Commanders figured he was worth taking a shot on. He currently ranks tied for 16th in NFL history with 129.5 career sacks.

With Washington seeking a potential Super Bowl appearance, a two-time champion in Miller brought them a talented, veteran presence who could help them move closer to their aspirations.
