Ex-Premier League star backs new Liverpool signing to be ‘player of the season’

Liverpool have plenty of new talents among their squad this season, with multiple players joining this summer.

Arne Slot has boosted his attack tremendously, with Hugo Ekitike already making a big impact in the Premier League.

Former Liverpool player Michael Owen has backed a different new signing to be a future player of the season.

Which Liverpool star does Owen see as a top talent?

Speaking to talkSPORT, Owen defended Florian Wirtz and praised the young attacker.

He said, “It’s fair to say that he hasn’t set the Premier League alight. But it’s also fair to say there have been three games, and you can absolutely tell he’s quality.

“In the Community Shield game, he did a couple of things that took my breath away, and I was like, ‘I’m more excited about seeing him than any other player this season.'”

Wirtz came to Liverpool with big expectations surrounding him, as the former Bayer Leverkusen star scored 10 goals and had 12 assists last season.

Owen continued, “It’s fair to say he’s been reasonably quiet in the three games so far, but he is adapting to a new league.

“He is adapting to new teammates. There are more things that he’s got to get used to.

There’s no question at all about his talent. He could be absolutely anything he wants to be. I’m including the player of the season, one of the best players in the world, in the future.”
