Red Sox fans give hilarious yet fitting new nickname to lefties in the starting rotation after Connelly Early’s debut

The Boston Red Sox just had another amazing debut from one of their prospects in Connelly Early, and it sparked a lot of conversation around the Sox’s starting rotation. One of them is a new nickname for all the lefties and the catcher Connor Wong.

A X user by the name of JustinMLB tweeted “We calling this the PigPen @LouMerloni?” with a picture of the lefty starters, Garrett Crochet, Payton Tolle, Early, and Wong. NESN, the Red Sox’ broadcast network, even commented saying they were taking that nickname, and made their own post with it.

So why PigPen? For starters, Lou Merloni gave the original nickname, “Pig”, to Crochet because his pitches were so filthy. Then Tolle came along and was given the nickname “Piglet”, because of his similar pitching style, speed, same throwing arm, and because he was younger than Crochet. Finally, Early made it, another lefty flamethrower with insane stuff, hence another “Piglet”. With three pigs, you now have the PigPen.

And how does Wong fit in? Well, Wong was the catcher who got Crochet back on track after having the worst start of his career. Wong’s the veteran catcher of the team, and his knowledge can help not just Crochet, but also Tolle, Early, and any other young pitchers as well.

Hopefully this nickname goes viral in the future, as these lefties are going to be around for a long time.
