Former Liverpool star backs Chelsea to be part of title race this season

Former Liverpool midfielder Didi Hamann has admitted he wouldn’t be surprised if Chelsea made it a three-horse race for the title this season.

The Blues have strengthened their squad this summer and have added a number of exciting players, especially in attack.

Enzo Maresca’s team will be looking to build on a largely positive last season, where they qualified for the Champions League and also won two trophies.

Chelsea have made a solid start to the season with seven points from a possible nine, and have conceded just one goal in their first three Premier League games.

In fact, the West London side managed to match Liverpool stride for stride until Christmas last year before falling off.

But Hamann has backed the young squad to learn from their mistakes and be part of the title race this season.

On the back of a largely positive last season, the expectation from Chelsea is to go a step further and challenge for the title.

Hamann feels the Blues could make it a three horse race for the title. “I expect Arsenal to be the main contender,” he said as quoted on X.

“However, I wouldn’t be surprised if Chelsea turned it into a three-horse race. They are a dangerous side, capable of winning six, seven, or eight games in a row.

“I don’t believe Manchester City can do that, but Arsenal, Liverpool, and Chelsea are the only teams I think are capable of such a run.”

While Hamann has backed Chelsea to be a part of the title race, not everyone is on board with the same idea.

The Stamford Bridge side have not won the league since 2017, and their former captain, John Terr,y does not believe that they are ready to win it this season either.

The squad is arguably better than it was last season, and the pressure will be on to once again make progress and close the gap at the top.
