The Philadelphia Phillies were dealt some tough news on Sunday, as Trea Turner suffered a hamstring injury that could jeopardize the rest of his season. The same day, it was revealed that top shortstop prospect Aidan Miller was getting called up to Triple-A.
Miller is the second-ranked Phillies prospect and has been playing incredibly well at shortstop in Double-A. The move, coinciding with Turner’s injury, created speculation over whether Miller could be a Turner replacement come October.
But after Turner’s injury returned as a Grade 1 hamstring strain, the Phillies might not need Miller this season. Ahead of the huge series against the New York Mets, Phillies manager Rob Thomson revealed that the Phillies have decided on Miller and a potential MLB call-up in 2025.
Phillies Decide on Potential Aidan Miller Call-Up
According to Devan Kaney of 94.1 WIP, Thomson and the Phillies aren’t planning to call up Miller to the Majors despite Turner’s injury. Thomson said, “He (Miller) needs to make it through this year on the minor league side, and then we can go from there.”

Miller is making his Triple-A Lehigh Valley debut on Tuesday, September 9th, and will have a lot of eyes on his performance for multiple reasons.
While Thomson and the Phillies aren’t planning to call him up to the Majors this season, if he performs incredibly well at Triple-A, and Turner’s recovery doesn’t go well, it should be at least a consideration.
Whether intentional or not, the wording that Thomson used for Miller doesn’t completely shut down a debut in 2025 for Miller. The Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs play 12 more games in 2025, and Miller will have a chance to prove himself during that time.
The season ends on September 22nd, and if the Iron Pigs make the postseason, the championship would be on the 27th. That would give a little bit of time for Miller to make it up to the Major Leagues if he dominates.

Seeing Miller make his MLB debut in 2025 would be exciting, but it’s incredibly unlikely. Barring a dominant showing in Triple-A, along with Turner’s recovery not going well, the Phillies have little incentive to bring Miller into the Majors.
The 21-year-old shortstop has a .259 batting average with 13 home runs, 41 RBIS, and 52 stolen bases this season in Double-A. He also has a very strong .809 OPS in 405 at-bats, and will look to continue his breakout season in Triple-A to finish out the year.
Thomson’s comment reveals that Miller will close out the regular season in Triple-A. He doesn’t outright shut down the possibility of Miller making his debut in 2025, but it’s incredibly unlikely.
It’s been a remarkable season for Miller in the minor leagues, and his chances of making the 2026 roster are a lot better now than they were earlier in the year. Turner has been one of the best shortstops this season and isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
Miller will have a chance to finish off his 2025 season strong in Triple-A, on the doorstep of the Major Leagues. But for now, a call-up to said Major Leagues isn’t expected, as the Phillies plan to have Miller finish the year in Triple-A with Lehigh Valley.
