Agent makes interesting comments on Sidney Crosby’s future in Pittsburgh

Sidney Crosby has never been and will never be one to make headlines through his comments in the media.

The Pittsburgh Penguins superstar has been in the spotlight his whole life, always going about his business as a true professional.

Crosby usually finds himself in the headlines thanks to his dominance on the ice, just the way he likes it. However, on Tuesday, Crosby became a major talking point in the aftermath of some interesting comments from his agent, Pat Brisson.

With the Penguins having missed the playoffs in three straight seasons and in the midst of a rebuild, the captain’s future with the team is often speculated about. Because of that, Brisson was asked whether his client, Crosby, would ever consider leaving Pittsburgh one day by Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic. His response raised some eyebrows.

“Well, it’s a reality. First of all, he’s been so consistent for 20 years. He had another great year last season. He just keeps going. The comparison is Tom Brady. We want Sidney to hopefully be in the playoffs every year. We want him to hopefully win another cup or two. So each year the team that he’s playing for fails to make the playoffs, it creates a lot of speculation. In reality, he’s not getting any younger. We’re here to support him. It’s the beginning of the season here. Let’s see how things are going. Hopefully they have a great season and the speculation will go away,” Brisson said.

“I mean, I’m answering something that … let’s put it this way, it’s always a possibility, you know? It’s been three years they haven’t made the playoffs. It all depends on how Sid is going to be and how the team is going to do. I maintain the same position that I do believe that he should be playing playoff hockey every year. In my opinion,” Brisson added.

The 38-year-old is about to enter the first season of the two-year, $17.4 million contract extension he signed with the Penguins just prior to the 2024-25 campaign. He will continue making his patented $8.7 million in average annual salary.

Crosby holds all the cards

Speculation and rumors can go on, though everything ultimately comes down to what Sidney Crosby wants to do.

With a full no-movement clause and the immense respect of general manager Kyle Dubas, Crosby will only be traded if he asks for it, and he’ll almost certainly decide on the destination.

Talk of a trade still feels premature given that his new contract has yet to even kick in. However, another poor season in Pittsburgh will certainly have the hockey world pushing the narrative for Crosby to head elsewhere.
