In Monday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles, the San Diego Padres suffered a big blow when All-Star reliever Jason Adam was carted off the field after an apparent quad injury.
Following the game, it was revealed by manager Mike Shildt that Jason Adam has a ruptured quad tendon, and he is expected to miss the remainder of the 2025 season, with a timeline of seven to nine months.
The San Diego Padres are 2.5 games back of the Los Angeles Dodgers for the top spot in the National League West, and the Adam injury is no doubt a slight setback.
Mason Miller reacts to gruesome Jason Adam injury
Mason Miller spoke to the media following the 4-3 loss to the Orioles on Monday:
“Really heartbreaking… obviously, it sucks losing him, not only for what he does on the mound but the type of person he is,” said Miller.
While the injury to Adam is devastating, it makes the addition of Mason Miller look brilliant, as the Padres now need another right-handed reliever to step up, which Miller already has since being dealt from the Athletics.
As for Adam, 2025 marked his first All-Star appearance in his eighth year as a professional. In 64.2 innings this season, he has posted a 1.81 ERA with 69 strikeouts. He’s given up just 4 home runs in those 64 innings, and his HR/9 is a microscopic 0.6.
The injury to Adam was not a great video to watch. It looks like a no-contact event, but he suddenly fell to the ground after a Gunnar Henderson comeback grounder, and when he fell to the ground, his quadricep appeared to have popped.
“This guy since he came last year has been a big part of our success,” Shildt said after the game. “This guy is an absolute workhorse… he means a lot to us and we’ll be praying with him and for him. We’re gonna miss him.”
The Padres have two more against the Baltimore Orioles at Petco Park, but they will have to somehow shake this injury off and regroup, as they can’t afford to lose many more games if they want to continue competing in the NL West.
