Browns’ Quinshon Judkins gets contract update, playing status news before Week 1 vs. Bengals

The Cleveland Browns have officially entered Week 1 of the NFL season. Their opener against the Cincinnati Bengals looms on Sunday.

And the Quinshon Judkins situation still doesn’t have a resolution.

Judkins has yet to sign his second-round rookie contract as he’s under investigation by the NFL for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.

Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot provided the latest update on Monday afternoon:

“Judkins remains unsigned and away from the team presumably while his agent, Todd France, and the Browns work through contract details. It’s either that or perhaps the fact that the NFL is still reviewing Judkins’ domestic battery case could be a factor in the holdup. The Browns are hopeful that Judkins will join the team in Berea this week, but no one knows for sure.”

According to Cabot, Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said, “I don’t  have an update.”

He was asked a follow-up about if Judkins could show up later in the week and still play against Cincy, and Stefanski replied, “I can’t get into that. Hard to speculate.”

Judkins had a domestic battery case in South Florida dropped on Aug. 14, but the NFL is still doing its own investigation.

“Even though he won’t formally be charged with misdemeanor domestic battery, the NFL can still suspend like it did Browns defensive tackle Mike Hall Jr. last year,” Cabot wrote. “He got five games for a domestic incident involving his girlfriend, even though he eventually pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of disorderly conduct.”

Judkins was drafted with the 36th overall pick in April, early in the second round, out of Ohio State. His pick was one of three the Browns received when they sent the No. 2 pick to the Jacksonville Jaguars for the right to take Travis Hunter.

The Browns’ RB depth chart is currently led by returning back Jerome Ford and rookie Dylan Sampson. Judkins would be right in the mix if he gets back on the field.
