Sunderland close in on deadline day deals for striker and defender

Sunderland look set to bolster its squad before the summer transfer window slams shut on Monday (September 1) evening.

The Black Cats have already made 11 first-teams signings in this window, as the club looks to improve its chances of remaining in the Premier League this season.

New additions for last season’s Championship play-off winners include experienced Switzerland midfielder and past Bundesliga winner Granit Xhaka.

Regis Le Bris now appears to be close to adding a striker to his squad, with a deadline day deal to sign Ajax’s Brian Brobbey having being struck.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Premier League new boys will pay an up-front fee of £17.3m for the 23-year-old, with a further £4.3m being part of the deal as potential add-ons.

The Dutch striker will undergo his medical on Monday to complete his move from Amsterdam to the Stadium of Light.

More defensive reinforcements on the way at Sunderland

Sunderland are also making sure Le Bris has enough defensive options, as a deal to bring Lutsharel Geertruida to the club on loan from Feyenoord for the season has been agreed.

Per Sky Sports Germany’s Philipp Hinze, Sunderland will pay a loan fee of £2.1m for the versatile defender.

The Premier League side will have an option to permanently purchase the Dutchman at the end of the loan spell for £17.3m.

The imminent arrival of the 25-year-old will follow the defensive additions at Sunderland this summer of Reinildo, Arthur Masuaku, Omar Alderete and Nordi Mukiele.

Le Bris will be hoping his finalised squad for the season can help build on the six points the team have impressively accumulated in the league after the first three games.
