Buffalo Bills projected to snap scoring streak for first time since 1990

The Buffalo Bills’ most notable drought that they’d like to snap, of course, is about winning the Super Bowl. And to do that, they have to end their drought of even making it to the big game.

But they’ve also got another long streak in place, one that also looks like it could be ended this season in a positive way.

The Bills haven’t led the NFL in scoring since 1990.

ESPN’s statistical analyst Mike Clay projects that this season, the Bills will top the NFL. He projects them to score 481 points, just ahead of the Baltimore Ravens and Philadelphia Eagles.

“They’ve been close during the Josh Allen era, ranking no lower than sixth each of the past five seasons (top-three four times),” Clay writes. “This season, the reigning NFL MVP is set up with a solid (and perhaps improved) supporting cast, led by RB James Cook, WR Khalil Shakir, second-year WR Keon Coleman, TE Dalton Kincaid and newcomer WR Joshua Palmer.”

Leading the NFL in points won’t automatically make the difference in winning a Super Bowl. But every little bit of added scoring juice can only help the cause.

Buffalo’s offense, frankly, isn’t the main concern.

The defense has to deal with an AFC absolutely loaded at the quarterback position. Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow are just the top dogs in a conference that also includes C.J. Stroud, Trevor Lawrence, Justin Herbert, Bo Nix, Geno Smith, Tua Tagovailoa, Justin Fields and future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers.

The Bills have scored enough to win in the playoffs. They haven’t been able to get crucial stops at pivotal moments.

But yeah, scoring a bit more can’t hurt. You’ve got to score more than the other team to win the game, after all.
