The New York Knicks are in win-now mode, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re in a great position for the long haul.
Over the past few years, the Knicks haven’t been afraid to make some big and sometimes controversial moves. From trading for Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns last offseason to firing Tom Thibodeau fresh off the franchise’s first conference finals in 25 years, the Knicks have been incredibly active.
Of course, with the abundance of roster moves over the past few years, the Knicks might soon have to pay the consequences for building a contender. With so many high-profile names on the squad, New York’s financial situation is far from ideal.
The Knicks need this team to work out
In a recent Bleacher Report article, Eric Pincus named the Knicks as having one of the worst salary cap situations in the league. After sacrificing so much of their future draft capital to build this squad, the Knicks might have no choice but to be in championship-or-bust mode.
Given that New York is expected to be among the East’s top contenders for the next few years, that might not turn out to be an issue. However, if things go south at any point, it could be disastrous.
With almost no room to pivot in the near future, the Knicks might have no choice but to cling on to the hopes of contending for a title, even after this specific group is past its prime. Although all will be worth it if a Larry O’Brien Trophy ends up in New York, that payoff certainly doesn’t come easy.
