Giants top prospect Bryce Eldridge unlikely to get September call-up

At the start of the 2025 MLB season, the San Francisco Giants looked promising. However, they went south after they traded for Rafael Devers from the Boston Red Sox.

San Francisco has a 66-68 record so far this season, and they are in third place in the National League West. On Thursday night, the Giants’ number one prospect, first baseman Bryce Eldridge, hit a two-run home run in the first inning for the Sacramento River Cats against the Reno Aces.

With another home run for the Giants’ top prospect, is there a chance that he could be potentially called up in 2025, or will they have to wait until 2026?

San Francisco Giants top prospect Bryce Eldridge will most likely remain in minors for the 2025 season

With the way Eldridge has performed this season in Triple-A, many are wondering when he is going to be called up to San Francisco. Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle believes that the Giants organization is going to keep him in Triple-A for the remainder of the season, rather than him being a September callup. Slusser said,

“It’s more likely that Eldridge’s season will be done when Triple-A Sacramento’s ends next month, especially because he missed several weeks with a hamstring strain in the middle of the summer. The real battle will commence next spring: Can Eldridge win a full-time spot in the lineup? And where? Rafael Devers is learning to play first base and, as a former third baseman, probably profiles as a better defender at the spot.

The Giants have referred to Devers at points as their long-term first baseman. This has not escaped Eldridge, who checked in with vice president of player development Randy Winn after the Devers trade in June.”

With San Francisco not planning on calling him up this season, there is a good chance that he can make the opening day roster in 2026. At the moment, Eldridge is not on the 40-man roster for the Giants. He was the 16th overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft and is just 20 years old.

In 52 games with Sacramento, he has a .244 batting average with 16 home runs and 54 RBIs, along with one stolen base. His on-base percentage is .314. Eldridge also played in 34 games this season in Double-A with the Richmond Flying Squirrels as well.

He is not projected to reach the MLB level until 2026 anyway. It is smart for San Francisco not to call him up this season and wait until next year, even if they have to wait a few weeks in 2026 for him to make his MLB debut.
