Jerry Jones’ embarrassing gaffe on Micah Parsons adds fuel to Cowboys-Packers trade fallout

At the beginning of August, Micah Parsons requested a trade from the Dallas Cowboys after a strong start to his career. Widely regarded as one of the best pass rushers in the NFL, Parsons felt disrespected by the organization and how it handled his situation—prompting him to seek a way out.

“Still I stayed quiet but again after repeated shots at myself and all the narratives I have made a tough decision I no longer want to play for the Dallas Cowboys. My trade request has been submitted to Stephen Jones personally,” Parsons posted.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones attempted to use negotiation tactics he’s relied on in the past. However, Parsons wasn’t receptive and preferred to work through his agent.

“The fact that Jerry Jones and the Cowboys believe they can negotiate a 9-figure extension with Micah Parsons without involving his agent says everything about the current state of the franchise. This entire situation is laughable from the Dallas side. It could’ve — and should’ve — been avoided. But instead, the Cowboys operated with pure arrogance, foolishness and stubbornness,” NFL insider Jordan Schultz posted.

On Thursday, Parsons got his wish. He was traded to the Green Bay Packers and signed a four-year, $188 million extension—making him the highest-paid player in the league outside of the quarterback position.

In a press conference following the trade, Jerry Jones appeared dismissive and disrespectful toward Parsons, repeatedly mispronouncing his name.

“Jerry Jones repeatedly calling Micah Parsons, ‘Michael,’ is just insane,” Schultz posted.

This is a bad look for the Cowboys, especially given Parsons’ status as the team’s brightest young star. Jones’ inability—or unwillingness—to say Parsons’ name correctly is yet another example of how poorly the entire situation has been handled. The Packers have acquired a proven elite pass rusher, while Jones continues to display the kind of pettiness that underscores just how badly the Cowboys mishandled this from the start.
