Cowboys’ QB Will Grier gets $396,000 contract update

The Dallas Cowboys are set with their initial quarterback room for the 2025 NFL season.

Dak Prescott is starting, of course. Behind him is this offseason’s trade acquisition from New England, Joe Milton. And then there’s Will Grier.

Grier was a cut before the 53-man roster deadline, but he was signed back to the Cowboys’ practice squad on Wednesday, according to The Athletic’s Jon Machota.

This preseason, Grier was 7-for-14 passing for 87 yards.

He was originally a third-round pick out of West Virginia by the Carolina Panthers in 2019.

Grier started two games as a rookie, losing both. Since then, he has not appeared in an NFL regular season game.

As a practice squad player, he’ll make up to $396,000 over an 18-game season ($22,000 weekly), although NFL teams have wiggle room to negotiate a veteran’s practice squad salary down to $17,500 per week. Grier’s official number hasn’t been reported.

Grier first joined the Cowboys in 2021 after the Panthers cut him. He spent the 2021 and 2022 seasons on the practice squad.

In 2023, he spent time on the practice squads of the Bengals, Patriots and Chargers.

In 2024, Grier spent a chunk of the season with the Eagles before returning to Dallas.

Now, he remains with the Cowboys and will continue trying to prove he belongs in the NFL.

He’ll be the second-most experienced voice in the QB room behind Prescott, with the young Milton potentially able to learn from both of the older quarterbacks around him.
