Ruben Amorim song lyrics: Man United fans’ chant to tune of Bonnie Tyler’s ‘It’s A Heartache’

Ruben Amorim may not have had a positive time as Manchester United head coach, but he has enjoyed tremendous support from the matchgoing fans.

Despite overseeing the Red Devils’ worst ever Premier League season and losing the UEFA Europa League final to Tottenham in his first six months in the job, the Portuguese tactician has been continually backed by the overwhelming majority of supporters, who have seen plenty of other managers fail to restore United to their position as English football’s dominant force.

United fans adopted a special song for Amorim early in 2025, and the refrain is still heard each week, whether at Old Trafford or an away ground. Choosing a 1977 single by Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler may seem unusual, but soccer fans are nothing if not creative when it comes to serenading from the stands.

This chant is definitely catchy, and the tune it borrows actually makes sense when you consider the context of Amorim’s time in charge.

Ruben Amorim song lyrics

These are the lyrics to United fans’ Amorim chant, sung to the tune of Bonnie Tyler hit ‘It’s A Heartache’:

Ruben Amorim,

He’ll bring the glory days again!

We’ll back him from the Stretford End,

He’ll turn the Reds around.

The original song lyrics are:

It’s a heartache,

Nothing but a heartache,

Hits you when it’s too late,

Hits you when you’re down.

When did the Ruben Amorim song start?

Fan chants in soccer often grow organically over a period of time, so pinpointing a precise origin can be tricky. According to United’s own website, the song first gained traction in late January 2025 when Amorim’s side faced FCSB in Bucharest in the UEFA Europa League.

It has since become a staple of United matchdays, particularly at away games and from the Stretford End at Old Trafford matches. It is generally viewed as a show of support for the manager in spite of the team’s poor results: most United fans are happy to acknowledge that wider problems within the club are to blame for the relative fallow period of the past decade, and that the man in charge of the team is trying to do what often seems like an impossible job.

Amorim himself was asked about it after United’s 3-0 league win at Leicester City in March 2025. “It’s strange,” he said. “It gives me a lot of responsibility.

“I know that we are so far away from what they [the fans] expect and what they deserve. I just want to win, to improve our performance, and we are far from what we need to show to our fans.”
