Astros call up catcher before series finale vs. Mariners

The Houston Astros were given some exciting news as they looked to begin a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies this week. Designated hitter Yordan Alvarez returned to the lineup after missing nearly four months with a fractured hand.

His return was spoiled by the Rockies, and the Astros lost their second game in a row with a final score of 6-1 on Tuesday night.

Just when the injury reports were looking like they were going at an upward slope, Houston made a questionable move on Tuesday.

Astros call up catcher Cesar Salazar

Before the Astros’ second game against the Rockies, The Athletic‘s Chandler Rome announced a questionable roster move that was made by Houston.

“The Astros are calling up César Salazar and will have a corresponding move later,” Rome posted on Tuesday afternoon.

A “corresponding move” is yet to be announced, but the Astros’ motive could be due to multiple things.

“Victor Caratini took a foul ball off his mask yesterday after taking a similar one in Baltimore last weekend. Yainer Diaz got hit in the wrist by an errant pitch in Baltimore, too,” The Athletic reporter noted later on after announcing Cesar Salazar’s promotion.

At least one of the two between Caratini and Diaz seems to be getting the day off on Wednesday, calling for Houston to bring in a third catcher to add to the roster.

Cesar Salazar had limited experience in the big leagues leading up to today. In 2025, he’s appeared in eight games for the Astros, with the last being on July 4. In seven total at-bats, he has a .143 batting average, .143 on-base percentage, and a .286 OPS.
