Boyhood Man Utd fan turned Grimsby Town keeper reacts to historic victory

It’s early days into the new season, but it’s the same old Manchester United.

The club lost to Arsenal in their opening league game, and the second weekend saw them draw against Fulham.

United turned their attention to their Carabao Cup match against League Two Grimsby Town, looking for a much-needed win.

Instead, Ruben Amorim’s side went down by two goals before halftime, and eventually lost on penalties after late goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire leveled the game.

After the game, Grimsby Town goalkeeper Christy Pym admitted he was “half-fuming” about the result as a boyhood United fan.

What did Pym say after Grimsby’s victory over Man United?

In an interview with Sky Sports, Pym said, “It’s not sunk in yet. I’m a Man United fan, so I’m half-fuming a little bit.

“Nights like this is what you play football for. Just brilliant. I should have done a little bit better [in the shootout], shouldn’t I? I made one save to keep us in it, and the boys have done the rest. It’s brilliant.”

Pym saved Matheus Cunha’s potentially game-winning penalty, and he came up big throughout normal time, despite United’s two late goals.

Pym continued, “It’s an amazing feeling, one that will live with us forever. The message all week has been about belief and knowing how good we are, and the gaffers instilled that.

“He [David Artell] told us not to just turn up, there’s always a chance if we play the right way with the right intensity. Why can’t it be us?

“So to pull that off is an amazing feeling, and we’re going to enjoy the moment.”
