It was nothing less than an eventful Monday night at Busch Stadium in a game between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Although it was a series-opener in a matchup between two teams outside of playoff contention, there was plenty of entertainment for the record-setting attendance numbers in St. Louis.
The Cardinals were able to win off a walk-off home run hit by first baseman Alec Burleson, but St. Louis’ season home run leader Willson Contreras wasn’t there to celebrate.
Willson Contreras gets a six-game suspension after Monday’s actions.
In the bottom of the seventh inning of the game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, designated hitter Willson Contreras had something to say to umpire Derek Thomas for the call. Thomas retaliated after either hearing or seeing something he didn’t like and would eject Contreras.
This ignited Contreras with anger, leading to him getting in the umpire’s face and players from the Cardinals having to hold the All-Star back from making things worse. Contreras would make his way to the dugout and make a scene, tossing a bucket of candy onto the field and storming into the locker rooms.

Contreras may be regretting his actions. After the MLB investigated the actions, he was suspended for six games and fined an undisclosed amount. He will appeal the decision in hopes that it will be reduced, according to MLB insider Bob Nightengale.

If the suspension stands, Contreras will miss the remainder of the series against the Pittsburgh Pirates and the upcoming series in Cincinnati against the Reds.
