Maple Leafs could waive penalty kill specialist this season

As the Maple Leafs enter this 25-26 campaign, there will be vast competition throughout the lineup for roster spots as the squad has increased its depth this summer despite some heavy losses up front.

One area of their lineup that could look quite different this season is the Toronto bottom 6 forward core. The Leafs have made some acquisitions this year that could force some past usual mainstays out of a lineup spot.

One of the players in question is 30 year old Czech forward David Kampf. He has 2 years left on his current 4 year $2.4 million deal. However, according to Nestor Quixtan of Heavy Sports the Leafs may be forced to waive Kampf this year as there may not be room for him in their offensive rotation.

Why would the Maple Leafs waive Kampf?

The Leafs have already made a trio of gains to their forward group this offseason with the additions of Matias Maccelli, Nicholas Roy and Dakota Joshua. Not to mention a full season of 2025 trade deadline acquisition Scott Laughton will be in the cards.

With all these players to compete with for ice time, this will leave little space for David Kampf in the Leafs offensive group. For that reason it may make sense for Toronto to waive Kampf if they can not find interest in the notable penalty killer’s services via trade. This would also open up some cap space that would provide the Leafs with some more much needed cap flexibility to potentially utilize moving forward.

We’ll see what decision the Leafs make on this front soon. Perhaps they give Kampf a chance to fight for his role this year and play out the rest of his contract if they can not find a suitor or decide waiving him is not needed.
