Cardinals’ encouraged by Masyn Winn’s MRI results as shortstop returns to lineup

St. Louis Cardinals’ young shortstop Masyn Winn has been dealing with knee discomfort for quite some time, but the Cardinals got encouraging news regarding the lingering injury on Monday afternoon.

Winn underwent his second MRI of the season on his knee on Monday, and the results showed signs of improvement, according to St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Derrick Goold.

Cardinals’ manager Oli Marmol said there’s no risk of further injury if Winn continues to play on the knee injury. Winn may need surgery in the offseason, but he’s not expected to miss any time.

Winn Demonstrates Grit Every Team Wants

The Cardinals’ shortstop has been dealing with his knee injury since the All-Star break. Winn got an injection to help with the pain during the break and had played every game since until this weekend.

Winn missed the final two games against the Tampa Bay Rays, and then underwent his MRI on Monday.

“It doesn’t feel great, obviously, and I would have played today if it felt good, but we’re going to get some testing done and see what it shows,” Winn said (h/t Redbird Rants). “I got an MRI earlier in the year, and it showed a little something. I’m assuming this one’s going to show a little more, but I don’t think that changes my outlook.”

Winn’s MRI actually showed improvement, and the shortstop is back in the Cardinals’ lineup on Monday as the team starts a three-game series with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

“It very well might [require surgery] and that’s something we’ll look at at the end of the year, but right now I want to be out there on the field,” Winn said (h/t Redbird Rants). “We’ve still got a chance to make the playoffs and play some good ball, so I want to be out there and playing shortstop as much as I can.”

At this point, Winn playing doesn’t risk further injury to his knee, so it will just be managing the pain. The Cardinals’ shortstop knows what’s on the line and wants to be out there with his teammates as long as they’re still in the pennant race.
