Cardinals get record-setting attendance number on Monday

There hasn’t been much to get excited about for St. Louis Cardinals fans this season. After being considered sellers during July’s MLB trade deadline, it doesn’t look like the fans are agreeing with what’s going on with the ball club.

Current president of baseball operations John Mozeliak is set to pass the torch to Chaim Bloom for the 2026 season, and Mozeliak looked to set up Bloom with young prospects rather than having players on expiring contracts once the season ends.

With a 65-67 record after beating the Pittsburgh Pirates in walk-off fashion on Monday night, the Cardinals are still fighting for postseason contention. They are now 16.5 games behind the NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers for first place and 5.5 games behind the New York Mets for the final spot in the NL Wild Card.

Cardinals set single-game record for the lowest attended game at Busch Stadium

The series-opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night, which saw Cardinals starting pitcher Michael McGreevy go against the Pirates’ Johan Oviedo, did not seem very appealing to fans.

“Tonight’s official attendance at Busch Stadium: 17,675. That is the lowest single-game (non-COVID restriction) attendance in the history of Busch Stadium III,” said The Athletic‘s Katie Woo.

Woo referred to it as “Busch Stadium III.” The Cardinals’ first stadium, originally Sportsman’s Park, was renamed Busch Stadium in 1953 and served as the team’s home until 1966. The second Busch Stadium opened that same year and remained i use until its closure in 2005.

The St. Louis Cardinals opened the third Busch Stadium in 2006, meaning that in almost 20 years of its existence, tonight’s game saw the least amount of fans ever.
