During his first season at Real Madrid, forward Kylian Mbappe turned heads throughout the 2024-25 campaign for both positive and negative reasons, though his on-field production could not be questioned.
While featuring in 34 La Liga matches for Real Madrid last year, Mbappe logged a staggering 31 goals during league play, a total that helped the French international earn his first Golden Boot award. In total, Mbappe registered over 50 goals in all competitions a season ago. Mbappe’s debut season for Real Madrid also marked the first time a member of the club had won the Golden Boot award since Cristiano Ronaldo achieved the feat in 2014-15. Ronaldo also laid claim to the lofty award the season prior in 2013-14 as well.
Now, Mbappe is hoping to imitate Ronaldo’s performance with his own repeat Golden Boot performance. Mbappe landed on the score sheet in Real Madrid’s season-opening win against Osasuna, and the Frenchman followed up that performance with a two-goal effort versus Real Oviedo earlier today.
Can Mbappe keep this pace?
During the first half, midfielder Arda Guler fed a clever pass into the path of a darting Mbappe, who smoothly pirouetted his way through the Oviedo defense before breaking the match open with a goal to his name. While one goal is all Real Madrid needed to secure three points over the weekend, Mbappe would later add to his efforts with a second-half goal as well.
In the 83rd minute, Vini Jr. was carrying the ball toward the top of the Oviedo box before he sprung Mbappe open out wide for an attempt at goal. Mbappe made quick work of his opportunity and sent the ball across the goal line for a brace to put Real Madrid comfortably ahead at 2-0. Vini Jr. would later add another goal during stoppage time to finalize a 3-0 victory for Los Blancos.

At this rate, Mbappe is averaging 1.5 goals per match, which is surely an unsustainable rate for the perennial Ballon d’Or contender. But if Mbappe can come close to keeping this pace for an extended period of time, the La Liga superstar will have a clear opportunity to become the first Real Madrid player to repeat as Golden Boot winner since Cristiano Ronaldo.
