Mavericks expected to extend P.J. Washington, reports say

After the Dallas Mavericks landed the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft and picked Cooper Flagg out of Duke University, questions flared for 27-year-old forward P.J. Washington.

Washington was acquired by the Mavericks after they traded for him with the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for Grant Williams, Seth Curry, and a protected first-round pick in 2027. In Washington’s first season with the team, he helped lead Dallas in a run to the NBA Finals in 2024.

Heading into the 2025-26 season, Washington is due for an extension while playing on an expiring contract that will have him being paid $14.15 million.

Mavericks’ P.J. Washington “likely” to receive contract extension

Washington has been a solidified piece within the Mavericks’ rotation when healthy, but after the team picked Flagg in June, questions started to flow on whether or not he was a part of Dallas’ plans for the future.

According to Marc Stein of The Stein Line, P.J. Washington is expected to remain with the Mavericks.

Stein reported on Sunday that Washington is “likely” to receive a contract extension from Dallas. On Aug. 29, he will be eligible for a four-year, just under $90 million deal.

In the 86 career games he’s played with the Mavericks, Washington has averaged 13.7 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.0 blocks while shooting 44.3% from the field and 35.3% from three.

If the contract extension rumors are true, he will be under the control of the Mavericks until he turns 30 years old. It would also give Dallas one of the most impressive groups of front-court players in all of the NBA, along with players like Anthony Davis, Daniel Gafford, and Derrick Lively II.
