Bayern Munich kickstarted their Bundesliga 2025/26 campaign with a thumping 6-0 win over RB Leipzig at the Allianz Arena on Friday.
Harry Kane hammered a second half hattrick while Michael Olise secured a brace with Luis Diaz adding another goal on his Bundesliga debut.
While Kane, Olise and Diaz grabbed the headlines for their superlative performances on the night, but Serge Gnabry also had a decent outing in a makeshift role, playing behind Kane in the hole.
The German forward, who was linked with move away from Bavaria throughout the summer came up with a couple of assists in an overall flawless outing.
After the game, Bayern Munich boss Vincent Kompany defended the Germany international in front of the media, as he said, “Serge is a very underrated player. There’s the opinion of people outside. And there’s our opinion at the club, and the opinion of his teammates. I think he’s a very underrated player, he doesn’t have many weaknesses.
“He’s been important in the big games for FC Bayern in the past. There’s almost no highlight without a Serge goal or assist. I’m not surprised because this is his normal level. I’m happy for him. He played this central role for the national team and for Bayern in the past. I’m happy we have this opportunity with Serge.”

With this the Belgian has more or less ruled out Gnabry’s departure from the Allianz Arena. Overall, Bayern Munich desperately lack personal and there should be no question about any more departures.
Kompany only has around 21 senior team players at his disposal and with Kingsley Coman’s departure and Jamal Musiala’s injury, the German champions need more reinforcements in attack.
What did Joshua Kimmich say about his teammate Serge Gnabry?
Gnabry played 69 minutes of the opening fixture against Leipzig, and he registered two great assists for the second goal scored by Olise and the third goal which was netted by Diaz.
The 30-year-old has already developed great synergy with Diaz, who has been with the club for only a few weeks.
Gnabry was so good that even Joshua Kimmich praised his Bayern and Germany teammate which he revealed after the win.
“When we went into the dressing room at halftime, I already told him that he was playing exceptionally well. He made incredibly good decisions and was very dynamic. That was an outstanding performance,” Kimmich told BILD after the match.
There is no denying Gnabry’s talent and capabilities, but injuries and inconsistent form have made his life difficult in Bavaria therefore talks of sales were introduced earlier in the summer.
However, if he keeps performing like this throughout the 2025/26 season then Kompany will be pleased with his options in attack, especially once Musiala returns from injury.
